Introduction

Functional Mathematics is a new subject introduced under the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2025 for Grade 9 students in the Arts/Humanities group students who study a humanities stream instead of the standard Science-track Mathematics.

Published by the National Book Foundation as the Federal Textbook Board, Islamabad, the book moves away from algebra-heavy, exam-style mathematics and instead teaches the practical, everyday math skills a person actually uses: converting currency, calculating profit and loss, working out Zakat, Ushr, and inheritance shares, ratios and percentages, real numbers, factorization, linear equations, coordinate geometry, similarity of figures, trigonometry, geometric constructions, and basic statistics and probability.

Unit 1: Financial Arithmetic teaches students to handle money in a globalized world: converting Pakistani Rupees to and from major world currencies using buying and selling exchange rates, and calculating cost price, selling price, profit and loss percentage, discount, and commission.

Unit 2: Zakat, Ushr and Inheritance applies mathematics to Islamic financial obligations: the Nisab for Zakat on gold and silver, the Zakat and Ushr rates, and the fixed shares of inheritance for the legal heirs described in the Quran and Sunnah.

HSA Notes teaching card, Class 9 Functional Mathematics NBF, Unit 2 Zakat Ushr and Inheritance — explains what Zakat is, the Nisab thresholds for gold and silver, the 2.5% Zakat rate, the formula, and a worked example calculating Zakat of Rs. 5,000 on savings of Rs. 200,000

Unit 3: Ratio, Proportion and Percentages covers ratio, proportion, unit rate, percentages, and budgeting.

Unit 4: Real Numbers covers real numbers and their properties, radicals and exponents, scientific notation, and real numbers in daily life.

Unit 5: Factorization covers factorization, HCF, LCM, square roots, and applications of factorization.

Unit 6: Linear Equations and Inequalities covers linear equations, radical equations, absolute value equations, linear inequalities, and their applications.

Unit 7: Coordinate Geometry covers the distance formula, mid-point formula, gradient/slope and inclination, equations of straight lines, angle between two lines, and applications of linear equations.

Unit 8: Similarity of Figures and Solids covers similar figures, areas of similar figures, and volumes of similar solids.

Unit 9: Trigonometry covers angles and their measurement, trigonometric ratios, solution of right triangles, and angles of elevation and depression.

Unit 10: Geometric Constructions covers construction of triangles and concurrency in triangles.

Unit 11: Statistics and Probability covers frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, and probability.

Detailed notes and solved exercises for all 11 units are being prepared and will be posted here as they become available.

Why This Subject Matters

Functional Mathematics exists because not every student needs or will use calculus, trigonometry, or coordinate geometry in daily life, but every adult needs to convert currency while travelling, understand a discount or commission, and know how Zakat and inheritance are calculated under Islamic law.

By building the curriculum entirely around real transactions and everyday problem-solving bank exchange counters, shopkeeper pricing, salary and commission slips, estate division, budgeting, and basic measurement this subject gives Arts/Humanities group students mathematical confidence they will use for the rest of their lives, rather than mathematics they may never revisit after the exam.

How to Study Functional Mathematics

  • For currency conversion, always identify whether you are given the buying rate or the selling rate before multiplying — banks and exchange companies buy foreign currency low and sell it high, and mixing up the two rates is the single most common error.
  • For profit and loss problems, always calculate percentages on the Cost Price, not the Selling Price, unless a question specifically states otherwise.
  • For inheritance problems, always deduct funeral expenses and debts from the total estate first, then distribute the fixed shares before dividing any remaining residuary share among the appropriate heirs.
  • Keep the Zakat Nisab values (7½ tola or 87.48 grams of gold; 52½ tola or 612.36 grams of silver) and the standard rates (2.5% Zakat, 5% or 10% Ushr) memorized, since these numbers are used directly in almost every problem in Unit 2.
  • As later units are added, build a single reference sheet of formulas (ratio and proportion, HCF/LCM, distance and mid-point formula, trigonometric ratios) since this subject spans several different branches of practical mathematics.

About HSA Notes

HSA Notes is an educational resource platform providing free study materials for Pakistani students, covering FBISE, Punjab, Sindh, and KP Boards in line with the New Books System. Materials span grades 9–12 across Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Computer Science, English, and Urdu, all prepared in a consistent, easy-to-follow branded format.

Besides free unit-wise notes and solved exercises, HSA Notes also offers online classes for students who want structured, teacher-guided sessions alongside self-study useful for learners who need concepts explained step by step or want doubt-solving support beyond what a PDF can provide. Conclusion

Functional Mathematics gives Grade 9 Arts/Humanities group students the practical numeracy they will use throughout life: converting currency, understanding profit, loss, discount, and commission, calculating Zakat, Ushr, and inheritance, and — across its later units — ratios, real numbers, factorization, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and statistics applied to real-world situations. Because this is a newly introduced subject under the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2025, solved, board-relevant practice is especially valuable for both students and teachers still adjusting to it.
