Easy Concept Notes

Factorization means expressing an expression as the product of its factors, the reverse of multiplying things out. This unit adds patterns beyond the basics: expressions like a to the 4th plus a squared b squared plus b to the 4th, trinomials of the form x squared plus px plus q or ax squared plus bx plus c, products of four linear binomials plus a constant, and the sum or difference of two cubes.

The HCF of two or more polynomials is the highest degree polynomial that divides them all exactly, found by factorizing each expression or, when that’s difficult, by a division process similar to long division. The LCM is the lowest degree polynomial each given polynomial divides into exactly, and the product of the HCF and LCM of two polynomials always equals the product of the polynomials themselves.

Algebraic fractions follow the same rules as ordinary fractions: multiply after factoring and cancelling, divide by flipping and multiplying, and add or subtract by first finding the LCM of the denominators.

The square root of an algebraic expression is another expression that, when squared, gives back the original, found by rewriting it as a perfect square through factorization or through a division method.

Sample Solved Question

Factorize x cubed minus 125. Using the difference of cubes rule, a cubed minus b cubed equals (a minus b) times (a squared plus ab plus b squared). Here a is x and b is 5, so x cubed minus 125 equals (x minus 5) times (x squared plus 5x plus 25).
