Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing and analyzing numerical data. Raw or ungrouped data has not been arranged in order, while grouped data is arranged into classes with a frequency for each. A class interval has a lower and upper limit, and class boundaries adjust these limits by half a unit so no value is missed.

The class mark is the average of a class’s boundaries. Arithmetic mean is the sum of values divided by their number. Median is the middle value of arranged data, and mode is the most frequent value. Probability measures the chance of an event and lies between 0 and 1, where 0 is impossible and 1 is certain.

Exercise by Exercise Breakdown

Exercise 11.1 focuses on organizing data. Students prepare frequency tables from raw data such as library readers and gratitude cards, add cumulative frequency columns, and identify class limits and boundaries. Later questions cover histograms with unequal class intervals such as savings certificates and item prices, and frequency polygons for workers’ ages and per capita income.

Exercise 11.2 covers measures of central tendency, opening with arithmetic mean by definition, then comparing batsmen scores, weighted mean of marks across subjects, and mean for grouped data such as fuel consumption and detergent sales. It covers median for simple and grouped data, including circle radius and old age home groups, then mode for lists and grouped distributions, ending with a combined mean, median and mode question.

Exercise 11.3 introduces probability, covering the word ALLAH, faulty items in a garment shipment, a flower themed spinner, a decagonal die, and a random one digit number. It then covers relative frequency for a tossed coin and a rolled die used to estimate expected frequency, closing with selecting girls from school sections for a science olympiad.

Miscellaneous Exercise Summary

The Miscellaneous Exercise 11 opens with a twenty part MCQ covering class marks, class interval size, chart types, and formulas for mean, median, mode and probability. Long questions follow on finding mean, median and mode, an unknown value when the mean of ten values is known, expected hits in a dart game, expected late arrivals, expected perfect scores, and probability from covid test reports.

Sample Solved Question

Question: Masses of 40 boys are grouped as 125 to 135 with frequency 8, 136 to 146 with frequency 13, and so on. Find the class boundaries of the first class.

Solution: The adjustment factor is half of 136 minus 135, giving 0.5. The lower boundary is 125 minus 0.5 equals 124.5, and the upper boundary is 135 plus 0.5 equals 135.5. So the boundaries are 124.5 to 135.5.
