Fluid Mechanics

Branch studying fluids (liquids/gases) at rest (statics) and motion (dynamics). Crucial for engineering, medicine.

Upthrust and Archimedes Principle

Definition: Upthrust (buoyant force) upward force by fluid opposing object weight. Archimedes: equals weight of displaced fluid.

Explanation: Pressure increases with depth; net upward force from pressure difference.

Derivation: For cylinder area A, height h in fluid density ρ_f: F_B = ρ_f g A h = ρ_f g V (weight displaced fluid).

Examples: Floating wood (upthrust = weight); sinking stone (weight > upthrust).

Exercises Solved

Solved MCQs

  1. Principle of floatation finds: A. Density
  2. Upthrust equals: A. Weight displaced liquid
  3. Sphere in Stokes law: B. Constant velocity
  4. Two drops form one, terminal velocity: C. 32 cm/s

Short Responses

6.1 Athletes wear body suits: Reduce drag; streamlined shape minimizes turbulence.

6.2 Turbulent vs streamline: Streamline smooth layers; turbulent chaotic.

6.3 River width change: Continuity; wider slower, narrower faster.

Long Responses

6.1 Upthrust: Upward force = weight displaced. Examples: Wood floats, stone sinks.

6.2 Principle floatation: For floating, weight = upthrust. Derivation, applications.

Numericals

6.1 Fog droplet vt=2.98 mm/s, η=1.9e-5 kg/m·s: r=5.1e-6 m

Solution: vt = [2(ρ_obj – ρ_fl) r² g] / 9η

Assignments

Assignment 6.1 Iron density 7.8 g/cm³, 200 N lighter water: (a) V=0.0255 m³ (b) Weight air=1950 N
